As my prolonged test/review of the New Balance 101 trail shoes continues, I continue to be blown away. They are simply the best trail running shoes I have ever run in. So far what I have found is that what New Balance did was simply take away everything that was extra on their best trail running shoe and left us with only what we need to have a kick-ass run. The main thing I have noticed is that it has taken away a lot of weight. These are not only the best running shoes I have run in, they are super light as well. At first this threw me off, I am used to feeling like I am running in tanks because I was taught to be worried about hurting the soles of my feet as I step down on rocks and jump over obstacles. It could be all marketing but I was convinced that to run well on trails I had to run in super beefy trail shoes. I am so glad that is not the truth. Not only are the New Balance 101′s super light, I can also feel a ton of the terrain, even as the forefoot remains protective against the rocks. The ease and comfort I now feel with my trail runs, thanks to the 101′s, is making running super fun all over again. I feel like I’m a child playing in the mountains and in the forest, it’s amazing.
I am sorry for being an adamant doubter. I’m starting to want to say sorry to all the people I scoffd at work getting into the minimalist running shoes. I laughed and I talked shit and now I’m running in them. The minimalist shoes are where it’s at. Granted all I have run in is the New Balance 101 and I have only taken them out twice but thus far they are amazing. Super light and I mean SUPER light. Stiff but not too stiff. I am going to run a few more times then I am going to write up a proper review but seriously those shoes thus far are easily the best trail shoes I have ever run. Nothing has come cose.
